Multitasking has great PR. Job ads request it, phones are engineered for it, and juggling five things feels impressively busy. Single-tasking, by contrast, sounds slow — almost quaint.
The research says the opposite: for anything that requires thought, doing one thing at a time is faster, more accurate and less exhausting. Here’s the evidence, the honest exceptions, and how to actually switch styles.
Multitasking is a myth (technically)
For cognitive work, the brain doesn’t parallel-process — it switches. What we call multitasking is really rapid task-switching, and every switch has a price:
- Switch cost. Reconfiguring for a new task takes measurable time. The American Psychological Association’s summary of task-switching studies puts the cumulative loss for heavy switchers at up to 40% of productive time.
- Attention residue. Business school professor Sophie Leroy showed that after a switch, part of your mind stays on the previous task — you’re physically on task B while cognitively still partly on task A.
- Error rates. Switching increases mistakes, particularly in detail-heavy work. You’ve felt this: the email sent to the wrong person while on a call.
- It feels better than it performs. Studies of self-described heavy multitaskers (notably Stanford’s media multitasking research) found they performed worse on switching tasks — while rating themselves highly.
The cruel twist: switching gives you little dopamine hits (new thing! new thing!), so it feels productive precisely while it drains output.
When multitasking is genuinely fine
Honesty matters here. Pairing tasks works when at most one of them needs thought:
- Podcast + dishes ✅
- Walking + phone call ✅ (mostly)
- Email + meeting ❌ — that’s two cognitive tasks, and both suffer
The rule: two automatic tasks can share you; two thinking tasks can’t.
What single-tasking gets you
Single-tasking (or monotasking) means one cognitive task at a time, sequenced — not fewer tasks overall. In practice, people who switch report three changes:
- Speed. Tasks completed in one continuous stretch take less total time than the same tasks interleaved — you stop paying the switch tax.
- Quality. Full working memory on one problem means fewer errors and better ideas, especially on writing and analysis.
- Energy. Task-switching burns glucose; a heavily-switched day leaves you fried without much to show. Sequenced days end with more done and more left in the tank.
How to actually single-task (in a multitasking world)
Knowing the research changes nothing by itself — your environment has to enforce it.
Make the queue, then hide it

Timebox the switches you can’t avoid
Email and messages do need answering — in batches. Two or three defined slots a day beats a permanently open inbox. Outside those slots, notifications off.
Define “done” before you start
A task without a finish line invites drift. “Work on the deck” becomes “draft slides 1–3”. When you hit done, you get a genuine stopping point — and a reward, if you’re wiring the habit properly.
Expect the itch, ride it out

Multitasking optimises for feeling busy. Single-tasking optimises for being done. The research has been consistent for twenty years; the hard part is building a day where one-thing-at-a-time is the default rather than a constant act of willpower.
